Phantasy Star has been Sega's signature RPG series and a favorite of fans for 19 years.
Of those games, 2000's Phantasy Star Online saw particularly enormous popularity as the first network RPG for home consoles, and received the top prize from the 5th annual Japan Entertainment Software Awards. Over the past five years, PSO has been brought to various consoles and today is still enjoyed by countless users.
Now, combining the story elements of Phantasy Star and five years of network-RPG experience with Phantasy Star Online, the fully-loaded, all-new Action RPG Phantasy Star Universe is born!
Phantasy Star Universe contains both a "Story Mode" for the single player and an online "Network Mode" for multiple players. Online battles take place in real-time as players collaboratively fight together. In the players' room, each player can create items, and create and customize their own Partner Machinery which is a robot that holds items retrieved in the field, and more.
Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus is the expansion pack for the popular Phantasy Star Universe game, bringing a more personalized and interactive universe to the acclaimed series. In addition to new enemies, weapons, levels and cities there will be more options available for gamers to further individualize and customize the look of their avatars. Ambition of the Illuminus continues the exciting PSU story online as the player’s personal online avatar is now the central character, investigating and working to restore peace in the chaotic Gurhal System. The player investigates through a series of single-player missions, meeting familiar characters like Ethan Waber from Episode 1, along with other new ones, including a GUARDIAN instructor, Laia Martinez. In addition, the online multiplayer world, with its fast-paced, engaging battle experience for up to six players, has been greatly expanded with new missions, new cities and new enemies.

Exclusive to the PC & PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system: Offline Episode 2 Story Mode with new voices and cut scenes.
The PC version of Phantasy Star Universe uses a cheat protection program called "nProtect" which protects against any program changes and attacks from computer hackers. This system needs to check through the internet each time a user wants to play the game in order to make sure it has the most up to date information, therefore the PC version of Phantasy Star Universe needs to be played whilst connected online.
Please note, no internet connection is required to play the single player version of the Xbox 360® or PlayStation®2 version
The story unfolds in a faraway place... the Gurhal System.
The three planets that make up the Gurhal System are populated by humans and three other races born of the humans--Newmans, Beasts and CASTs.
Wars between the races raged for 500 years, but the races eventually settled into a moderately peaceful coexistence. But now, after a century of peace, certain devastation arrives ...
Seventeen-year-old Ethan Waber and his sister Lumia were attending the grand ceremony commemorating the centennial of the Gurhal System's Tripartite Treaty when suddenly a mysterious alien species known as the SEED launched a surprise attack. The Alliance Military's armada was completely unprepared for the sudden invasion and was all but destroyed as the ceremony's attendees succumbed to panic. In the ensuing chaos, Lumia is left behind in the rubble.
In order to save his little sister, Ethan borrows some equipment from a Guardian named Leo, and for the first time in his life, he's flung into a dangerous battle of life and death...
In Story Mode, the player assumes the role of Ethan Waber, a young man enlisted in an interplanetary security force known as the GUARDIANS. With the help of numerous partners, he fights to uncover the mystery of the SEED, stands up against conspiracy, and grows up along the way as an epic story unfolds.
What is it that you fight to protect?
Though Ethan Waber had brought an end to the HIVE, a new threat to Gurhal lay on the horizon. A group of "human supremacists" known as the "Illuminus" have vowed to exterminate all non-human races.
To make matters worse, individual Guardians are now becoming the targets of violent attacks, and former hero Ethan Waber is wanted for the attempted assassination of the GUARDIANS President. Are these events connected?
As a newly appointed Guardian, and with instructor Laia Martinez as your guide, it's up to you to investigate these troubling circumstances. The fate of the Gurhal system rests in your hands.
A young man living in the GUARDIANS Colony. While attending a celebration commemorating the centennial of the Tripartite Treaty, he and his sister Lumia are caught in a SEED attack. After this experience, Ethan joins the interplanetary security force, the GUARDIANS, and begins training under Karen Erra.
After three years of experience with the GUARDIANS, Karen is assigned to train Ethan. As a girl, her mother was killed by native creatures, and although she is a Newman, she is unable to use TECHNICS for some reason. To compensate for this deficiency, Karen pushes herself to do her best, sometimes overly hard.
The Divine Maiden, symbol of the Communion of Gurhal. Kind and compassionate, her grace and beauty offer spiritual support to the followers of the Gurhal Faith. She first encounters Ethan en route to the Tripartite Treaty Centennial Celebration.
A powerful figure, admired by other Rogues. He doesn't advocate killing needlessly, nor stealing from the poor. He believes in honor and will not betray those close to him. By his tendency to avoid bloodshed, it is clear he doesn't care for violence. However, he will not hesitate in resorting to it when necessary. He is captain of the Landeel.
The commanding officer of the RELICS Control Division of the Endrum Collective, a section of the Alliance Military charged with the investigation and protection of RELICS. He is not a formal military officer, so he has no official rank. Above all, he loves to fight, and as a mercenary soldier looking for a battle, he executes his missions for the Endrum Collective faithfully.
The events of Network Mode take place in the same place and era as Ethan's adventure in Story Mode. In order to help bring peace to the Gurhal System, the interplanetary security force known as the GUARDIANS is looking for new recruits. That's where you come in... along with the countless other players you'll encounter on the network. There, you'll find stories not told in Story Mode. You might even encounter a few familiar faces.
In Network Mode, the character you create becomes a member of the GUARDIANS, stationed in the Gurhal System. Network Mode is constantly evolving with new missions and areas to explore, so be on the lookout for big changes or additions!
With the Ambition of the Illuminus expansion, players are presented with an even wider range of options to customize their characters. Many of the options within character creation have been expanded as well as the ability to alter your character's appearance down the line through the Makeover Room.
Many new styles of clothes and parts have surfaced as well giving all GUARDIANS the chance to express their own unique sense of fashion and style.
In addition, previously unalterable characteristics, such as hairstyles and accessories will have the ability to be changed at the makeover shop. Now there is no need to worry when initially creating your character. If you should decide to further evolve or customize your avatar at a later time, the makeover shop now offers even more versatility and options.
In addition to the ability to customize the base features of your character, Ambition of the Illuminus has expanded the choices for GUARDIANS looking to express their distinctive style with the addition of new clothes and parts options. Unique clothes and parts will also be found in the traditional stores as well. With so many choices and the ability to continue to evolve your style, the character customization possibilities are nearly limitless.
After selecting a race and sex, you can determine features like appearance and body type. With the smooth morphing of faces and body types, as well as a diverse selection of various parts, you can create a character as unique as yourself!
CAST character creation is a little special. You select the base shape and color of the face and artificial skin, and then choose from helmets and clothes, as well as body, arm, and leg parts. You can create anything from a humanoid form to a completely mech-style form. It's your call.
mission counter is opened. On this screen, the leader can select a mission and begin an adventure.
Network Mode enables you to form a party with up to six players. With the help of your partners, you can take down even stronger enemies.
Popular in Phantasy Star Online, Voice Chat has evolved. Optional "shouting" and "thinking" modifications can be applied to your voice while chatting. Also, if two or more players say the same thing at the same time, their chat bubbles will merge to create a "louder" bubble.
It's no fun having a well-constructed character, but only being able to see his or her back all the time. Cut-in Chat was created with that in mind. The camera cuts in on your character and their matching expressions as you speak. No longer limited to speech, you can now relay your emotions visually to others!
In response to the larger number of people interacting in the lobby, and for those worried that chatting with just a few people will be difficult, there's Party Chat. Even when in different areas, your voice will be carried to the other members of your party.
Also, using Simple Mail you can send mail to a particular individual. The lobby actions popular in the PSO days are back with even more variations than before.
Ambition of the Illuminus takes the My Room from Phantasy Star Universe and expands on every single element. Rooms that used to be solely for displaying trophies or wallpapers are transformed into full living spaces! Along with many types of new room decoration themes, and over 200 new room decoration items, there are new systems for moving your room to different planets, new shop search functionality, a new bulletin board, and new jukebox features.
Read about the changes you can expect from the all new expansion, and learn about how you can completely customize your room experience like never before!
The new item placement grid gives you the freedom to place items in any way you like. Along with more floor space to arrange your furniture and large trophy items, there are wall spaces for posters and banners and counter spaces for smaller items. Many tables and cabinets will allow you to place small items on top or inside of them for better display of your item collection.
Whether futuristic or classical, there are many ways to add high style to your living quarters. There are also new themes that can transform your room into a private gym or café. Many of the themes have extra features such as unique ceiling displays, built-in fixtures, or even an extra room. Your shop will also now change along with your room, and includes a few spaces for item placement.
While you may feel at home with the view of space from the residential block of the GUARDIANS Colony, the GUARDIANS will now let you move into the living quarters of the Branches located on each planet. Not only will you change the scenery outside your windows but you will be able to enter and exit your room closer to your favorite missions.
Searching for the best deal in player shops is now a breeze with the ability to search by price or rarity. You can also view prices and item details without leaving your room.
You will be able to use the video phone to leave messages for the owner of the rooms you visit.
New information will be flagged with an exclamation point to alert you to news updates.
Along with many new styles of furniture upon which you can place items or use for sitting, there are other items that are interactive and give characters special animations when activated. You can also now place items in other characters' rooms, but once you do you can not pick them back up. This is a great way to deliver a gift box with an item inside to a friend.
Using a new upgrade, the Nanotransformer X, you can increase the storage capacity of your Partner Machine. There are also new upgrades that will allow you to change battle-experienced partner machines to male-type models. In addition, your Partner Machine will now greet shop visitors with a custom message as they enter your shop and make purchases.
Now you can set the background music to accompany your room theme, or just change it whenever you are in the mood for something new. You can find a few discs as prizes in the Casino and new music will become available in upcoming releases.
Synthesis success rates have been increased, especially for items requiring rare ingredients. While failure is still possible, there is a much better chance a failed synthesis will produce an unusual or rare material or item. Striking weapons and armor will also have a better chance to receive a high elemental attribute.
While a lot has changed under Ambition of the Illuminus, the core components of the My Room feature are still very extensive. Players can do a lot with their personal space, such as interact with their Partner Machinery to synthesize items and gear, or dress the room up with a custom look and feel.
Take a look at what made the My Room special and learn more about this feature that makes the Phantasy Star Universe experience so unique.
Your room starts out somewhat plain, but you can accent it with decorations, or you can remodel it to make it your own personalized room. You can also use a remodeling ticket to change the entire look and feel of your room. Be on the lookout for limited edition seasonal themes and items!
In Phantasy Star Universe, a single online account can store up to four created characters. Each character will have their own room and Partner Machinery. In each room, there will be a common storage box, and by placing an item in the Common Box, all characters on that account will be able to access that item.
In the player's room, there's an information terminal called the "Photon Wave Communication Device," or more commonly, the "Vision Phone." Be sure to check your phone when you want to move to other player's rooms, search for shops, and check to see who has visited your room.
By changing clothes, your character will be able to display its individuality. You can change clothes at the clothing shop in each city, as well as the dressing room inside your room. (In your room, you can only put on clothes that you've already purchased.)
Every Guardian who graduates from training school is given their own personal Partner Machinery. The Partner Machinery can keep items and will provide information for missions. When you give them particular ingredients that you've gathered, they are also able to manufacture items.
Items and weapons you receive can be given to your Partner Machine, and in doing so they can be broken down and fused to your machine to help them evolve. If your partner machine evolves to a certain point, it can even come with you on your missions.
While fighting through the various missions within Gurhal, players will find different items or weapons that can be synthesized with the Partner Machinery. These weapons, armors, and items offer a unique level of customization by allowing players to build in specific attributes for better performance.
With the arrival of Ambition of the Illuminus, there are many new combat features that will provide you with more unique experiences! GUARDIANS will now be able to strike back with perfectly timed critical attacks, grind weapons without fear, and increase Photon Points through normal play. Best of all, these changes are now available for both Ambition of Illuminus players, and original Phantasy Star Universe owners!
Attacking enemies with perfectly timed attacks delivers critical strikes. When performing attacks using a steady, deliberate rhythm, GUARDIANS will get audio and visual cues, as well as a marked increase in the overall damage from the attack. Timed attacks can now be applied to all sorts of attacks and they will even make a powerful Photon Art attack more devastating.
After blocking, you can now instantly launch a counter attack on enemies. Successful blocks do more than just prevent damage, they offer an opportunity to fight back with a critical strike or a Photon Art! Counter Attacks must be performed quickly, so be sure to react quickly!
Photon Points, the energy required for all Photon Arts, can now be recovered with each normal swing attack. No longer must GUARDIANS wait extended periods while points are recharged, or rely on expensive Photon Charges.
Ambition of the Illuminus will offer many new Photon Arts to help GUARDIANS in their battles the malicious SEED. To help GUARDIANS deliver even more damaging attacks, the total level earned on all Photon Arts will be increased to 40!
That's not all; GUARDIANS can now learn new Photon Arts and retain the levels earned from replaced Arts. This adds a whole new level of customization by allowing GUARDIANS to switch classes and Photon Arts to fit their needs.
All weapons continue to have a maximum amount of 10 upgrades, but a new feature will greatly reduce frustration when upgrading weapons. In Ambition of the Illuminus, if an upgrade fails, the weapon is no longer lost. Instead, weapons lose their total grind amount, and the maximum grind total is reduced by one. GUARDIANS will still make tough choices on whether to upgrade weapons, but the risk is much lower.
In Ambition of the Illuminus, the overall weapon damage has been increased for all weapons. In addition, the damage bonuses tied to Attributes in weapons and enemies has been reduced. This offers increased effectiveness for all weapons and encounters!
All missions will now feature an additional amount of meseta drops to help enhance the income of new GUARDIANS from the start. The increase is quite substantial, allowing GUARDIANS to gain more money as they play and at the end of a successful mission completion!
Photon arts are a powerful form of magic attack that consume photon points. Photon arts are named differently depending on weapon class: linked to striking weapons they are called "skills," ranged attacks are called "bullets," and magic weapon-linked attacks are called "TECHNICS."
With striking weapons, such as swords and sabers, a skill can be used as a follow-up attack after a normal attack. Try different variations and combinations in battle.
There are numerous photon arts for each type of weapon. Aside from increased damage, ranged attacks and TECHNICS can have attributes, such as fire and ice. Photon arts have their own levels; the more you use them, the more powerful they become.
Ambition of the Illuminus will introduce four new classes of weapons to Phantasy Star Universe. The Madoog is a TECHNIC casting device that can be equipped in an offhand, allowing you to keep some support TECHNICs at the ready while using a one hand striking weapon or attack wand in your main hand. The Shadoog, also an offhand device, will automatically fire at nearby enemies without needing to be readied or activated. The photon Whip is a melee weapon for advanced force classes that can sweep over a large group of foes and inflict negative status effects depending on the element of the weapon. The Slicer is a melee weapon that launches spinning blades that will cut through multiple foes; this weapon gives advanced hunter types a strong and flexible short range attack when it's too dangerous to go toe-to-toe with the enemy.
Madoogs can be used by all TECHNIC using types, including basic Forces. Like a wand, you can link any two TECHNIC photon arts to the Madoog. Although the TECHNIC Power on Madoogs is low, they have a very fast casting animation and will be very helpful for players who want to attack and still be able to heal with no delay.
Shadoogs can be used by all basic types, and advanced gunner types including the new Acrofighter type who will have access to the most powerful versions. Shadoogs are not linked to a Photon Art but have a set element and firing pattern. Shadoogs do not use photon points and do not need recharging. Because the Shadoog will attack automatically, they can add a small amount of damage and spread status effects while you are using a one-handed melee weapon or wand.
Whips can be used by Fortetechers and Wartechers and is a specialty weapon of the new Acrotecher type. Unlike most melee weapons, whips can be used to inflict status effects similar to the way bullets do. Whip attacks will sweep through multiple enemies and while not high-damaging are very effective at keeping a large group of enemies at bay. Like other one-handed melee weapons the whip attacks fast and does not have long combos.
Visshi Gruuda is the first Photon Art available for the Photon Whip. Spinning the whip around you like a chain will build up the power to knock your opponents away with the second part of this combo.
The Slicer is available for Fortefighters and Fighgunners and is especially suited to the Acrofighter type. Like an atlatl used for hunting or xistera used for sport, the Slicer is a tool that amplifies the wielder's strength to launch a projectile with amazing force. The photon projectiles of the Slicer will hit multiple targets and make this a very effective weapon for attacking small groups that are too dangerous to get close to. Like other one-handed melee weapons, you can use the Slicer to make normal attacks or spend its Photon Points to launch a short chain of Photon Art attacks.
Chikki Kyoren-jin will be available from the Skill Photon Art vendors. This Photon Art has an amazing damage potential, ripping through any enemies that stand in your path.
Along with the new weapon categories there will be over one hundred new weapons only available in Ambition of the Illuminus. Competition between the major manufactures G.R.M. Yohmei and TENORA WORKS has intensified and they now offer a large variety of low and high end items that previously were only available from one source.
For CAST player bored with the Gatlings lasers and missiles currently available there are new SUV weapons to add some punch to your attacks. Equip yourself to sweep the room with a giant sword, call down freezing rain, or pull down heavy objects from the sky onto your foes.
Players who have not yet upgraded to the Ambition of the Illuminus expansion will still have access to a very diverse selection of weapons and SUV attacks. Read on to see what you can expect to see in the field!
Over Twenty Categories of Weapons
There are over twenty different categories of weapons, all with unique characteristics and functions in combat.
There are three types of weapons: close-range striking weapons like swords and sabers, long-range firearm weapons like handguns, and TECHNIC-casting wands and other magic weapons.
You can have two different types of weapons in each hand, like a one-handed striking weapon or a TECHNIC weapon in your right hand and a firearm weapon in your left hand.
Customize your weapon combinations for your left hand and right hand, or for both hands. You can create several combinations of weapons in the Action Palette, then switch between them freely, even during combat.
Predict what kind of combat situations you may encounter, and you can put together weapon setups to match strategies like "long-distance shooting" and "up close and personal," to switch between weapons immediately and level your enemies!
With ranged weapons like the handgun and the longbow, you can aim and attack with a first-person view. If you aim well, you can attack enemies that are higher than can normally be reached and shoot at enemies that are difficult to attack.
Beasts have an ability known as Nano Blasting to help them survive environmental disasters and catastrophic accidents through sheer physical strength.
This ability is brought about by taking damage from enemies. After a certain damage level is exceeded, their body strength is temporarily boosted and they transform into a powerful beast form. The result is immeasurable attack power, defense power, and speed.
Transformed, they truly are beasts. Their fighting style becomes wild and unleashes waves of powerful attacks on their enemies. After a certain amount of time passes, however, they return to their normal state, so an escape route is always vital.
By using a long-distance, satellitle-based nano transformer, a CAST can equip special equipment and launch an extremely powerful special attack. Only CASTs can use this skill.
The SUV weapon can be invoked after a certain set level of damage is taken. There are numerous types of SUV weapons, such as the gatling gun and the giant laser.

Unlike other classes, Master Classes will only be able to equip S-rank weapons and shield lines. They can equip rank C to S of other equipment. In order to switch to a Master Class, players will need to raise their type level to 10 or higher with two related Advanced Types.

players to play a variety of different roles from powerful attacks to healing and support.
Ambition of the Illuminus introduces two new advanced guardian types with new styles of play. The Acrofighter is an expert at striking fast at close range with single-handed weapons and will have exclusive access to the most powerful models of the new slicer weapon class. They also have access to many useful ranged sidearm and twin weapon sets. The Acrotecher is the strongest type at assisting party members with support TECHNICs, and can use a variety of weapons including exclusive access to the highest ranks of the new whip and madoog weapon types.
Fighgunners will be able to use the new weapon classes of slicers and shadoogs. Both their skill and bullet Photon Art limits have been improved as well, keeping their status as an all-around excellent fighting type. Fighgunners can now use S-rank of machineguns, handguns, and twin handguns.
Rangers. Primary strength is in striking weapons, but can also use firearms.
Guntechers will be able to use the new weapon classes of madoogs and shadoogs and will have access to S-class longbows. Their bullet Photon Art limit has been increased, and their ability to use TECHNICs has been greatly boosted making them a stronger support type.
Forces. Can use both firearms and TECHNICs for the ultimate in long-range support.
Wartechers will be able to use the new weapon classes of whips and madoogs and will now have access to S-class wands and A-class swords. With the exception of support TECHNICs, their Photon Art limits have been raised across the board, and they will now be able to take full advantage of melee combos and strong attack TECHNICs.
Fortefighters will be able to use the new slicer weapon class and will now have access to S-class sabers and twin sabers. Their skill and bullet Photon Art limits have been improved, now along with their dominance in melee combat they can also make a more significant contribution with their high damage pistol attacks when needed.
Although the only new weapon Fortegunners will have access to are shadoogs, their raised bullet and skill Photon Art limits will improve their sharp-shooting and shot-spraying and finally give them the use of some melee combos.
Fortetechers will be able to use the new whip and madoog weapon classes. Only their attack TECHNIC limit has been raised, maintaining the type's exclusivity to the most devastating and visually impressive TECHNIC Photon Arts.
Protransers will not gain any new weapon classes, but will now have access to the S-rank of every weapon they can use, 10 weapon classes in all! They will also have exclusive use of the new EX traps which will affect large groups with pulsing effects. Along with an improvement in their bullet Photon Arts, they now gain the unique ability to see traps without using goggles.
traps. All traps become several times more powerful in the hands of this type.
Many new and unique lobbies are added with the Ambition of the Illuminus expansion. These lobbies offer not only new places to explore and meet up with new players as well as old friends, but unique content, prizes and special features to GUARDIANS.
With the Ambition of the Illuminus expansion, players will have access to a new Casino Lobby. At the Casino Voloyal, players will be able to acquire coins and place bets on a giant Roulette wheel, or test their luck on one of the many Slot Machines to earn prizes available only at the Casino Voloyal exchange table.
Each day, players will be allowed to obtain 100 coins to use exclusively at the Casino Voloyal for Roulette or Slots. Coins are distributed as 100 bronze pieces, and as you win more, they will be converted to silver (worth 100 bronze) and gold (worth 100 silver) coins to be used specifically for purchasing exclusive prizes at the Casino Voloyal Exchange Shop.
The Casino Voloyal features a giant Roulette wheel, where you may place any number of coins on a square designating a color, a number, or a range of numbers. Multiple bets per spin of the wheel are allowed and can increase your odds of winning. Each bet will yield different odds, and the payout will be different depending on the specific bet. The lower the odds, the higher the payout -- so place your bets accordingly!
Players will also have the opportunity to use their coins to test their luck at one of the three types of slot machines located around the Casino Voloyal. Each type of slot machine is designed to accept one of each of the three different coins: bronze, silver, or gold. Much like normal slot machines, the goal is to match three consecutive identical images, each embedded with different odds. If a player gets a special set, they will enter 'Fever' mode, which doubles the amount of payout for the next matches. While in Fever mode, if a player gets a set of King Rappys, they will win the ultimate GappoGappo Jackpot, which is collected from a pool of all the coins spent at that machine.
The Casino Voloyal features a special coin exchange shop, where players can exchange the coins that they've won for prizes only available at the Casino Voloyal. These exclusive prizes range in cost and rarity and including the exclusive 'Showtime' room decoration by exchanging coins -- so test your luck and try to win big!
With the world of Gurhal expanding rapidly, players will find themselves entrenched in exciting new missions, leading to new and captivating lobbies throughout the system. The new lobbies bring opportunities to meet new players, recuperate from a difficult battle, or interact with old friends. To help these brave GUARDIANS along in their quest, the lobbies in Ambition of the Illuminus extend new features, including the abilities to change luck and an item delivery system.
At the Communion of Gurhal on Neudaiz, players will be allowed the opportunity to draw a fortune card for the chance to change their luck. You may visit the Communion of Gurhal anytime you wish and may draw one of three different types of fortunes per day. With the many wondrous new adventures ahead, good fortune can mean the difference between success and failure in your quest.
While a lot of additional lobbies are available under the new Ambition of the Illuminus expansion, there are still a few refinements that original Phantasy Star Universe owners will appreciate! We've made accessing areas of the world much easier, and added services to clear inventories while out on the go. Read on for more info on these exciting changes!
Ambition of the Illuminus offers increasingly beneficial features for both beginning and advanced players alike. Within the many new lobbies, players will discover a system allowing them to deliver items from their inventory to their common boxes back home. For a small fee, players can lighten their load before venturing forth on their next adventure, without having to return to their room to free up space in their inventory.
In addition to the ability to quickly transfer to your party's lobby, Ambition of the Illuminus adds a special transfer ability that allows players to immediately teleport to other lobbies as well. For a small fee, players will now be able to transfer to any lobby they have previously visited by talking to the CAST transporter in front of each flyer base.
Extra Mode becomes available as you progress in Story Mode. You can create your own character, form parties with characters from Story Mode, and set off on your own adventures!
your own adventures! With your own room and Partner machinery, you can manufacture new items and develop your Partner machinery.
completely up to you. As you progress in Story Mode, new characters and stages will become open to your character in Extra Mode.
you can keep playing in this mode indefinitely. Build up your own hero and raise your Partner Machinery to your heart's content.
You can operate any of these three vehicles yourself. The floader is a surface bike that travels at high speeds over water. The striker is an Alliance Military surface combat vehicle; it's slow, but has powerful attack capabilities. The lunga is a native creature on Moatoob; its breath is capable of clearing things out of your way, but as it's a living creature, with use it will eventually get tired and its strength will weaken.
G-Flyers aren't just limited to staying within the atmosphere--they can also travel through space. They are the most common way to travel over medium distances for the GUARDIANS. PPT Shuttles move between the planets on vector tracks. Interplanetary PPT travel is run by the Tripartite Travel Bureau, or TTB.
The Gurhal System is the stage for Phantasy Star Universe. It is an all-new solar system, different from our Earth's and the ones that have previously appeared in the Phantasy Star series.
The Gurhal System contains three inhabitable planets: Parum, Neudaiz, and Moatoob. Populating these worlds are four races of people: humans, newmans, CASTs, and beasts.
Protecting peace throughout the system, alongside the Alliance Military Force, is the interplanetary security force known as the GUARDIANS, to which our hero Ethan and his partners belong.
First, a brief introduction to the GUARDIANS Colony and the three planets:
The GUARDIANS organization owns and controls the GUARDIANS Colony.
The GUARDIANS Colony had modest beginnings as a small colony purchased as the home base for the organization. As the GUARDIANS grew larger, the colony was further developed into the huge residential colony it is today, with over a million permanent residents.
The GUARDIANS travel all across the Gurhal System for missions, using a transportation system called "Vector Tracks" to reach each of the three planets. The Vector Tracks canbe easily recognized due to their rows of ring-shaped control units.
Clyez City can be found at the center of the GUARDIANS Colony and is where the GUARDIANS Headquarters are located.
There are multiple cities in the GUARDIANS Colony that are very similar in design to Clyez City.
The Linear Line is an antigrav transportation system that traverses the inside of the GUARDIANS Colony. It is also used on other colonies and on extremely large ships.
The Gurhal System is home to four races.
Each race was originally born of humans.
The Gurhal System's long history is filled with bitter struggles between the races.
To end the 500-year war, although humans are the most prominent race, they consented to being placed in the lowest social position. One hundred years have passed since the Tripartite Treaty was signed. At a glance, the Gurhal System appears to be at peace, but throughout the system there is racial prejudice and flames of war still smolder.
The most populous race in the Gurhal System, and the original race from which the others were derived. Humans tend to be all-purpose, with a good balance in abilities. They are not especially poor at anything, and can manage any kind of occupation. On the other hand, they don't excel in any one area. They primarily live on Parum.
Humans are the most populous race in the Gurhal System, but their position in society is not necessarily very high.
This can be seen in the distribution of power determined at the end of the 500-year war. The three planets are ruled by CASTs, newmans and beasts, and humans do not have a planet of their own.
The other races, while not as balanced as humans, are superior in specific areas. Rather than being considered the original race, humans are considered a sub par race with limited abilities.
The characters that appear in Story Mode live on the colony and various planets and belong to various organizations. Here, we'll introduce those who will fight alongside you and Ethan in your struggle, those who will oppose you, and their respective organizations.
The GUARDIANS are a security organization established to ensure the safety of their clients, dealing primarily with requests from individuals concerning dangerous native creatures and criminals.
In the Gurhal System there is an official police force, but they are unable to police the entire system by themselves. For that reason, this interplanetary company was created, and Guardians are granted limited police powers in the execution of assigned missions.
One hundred years earlier, at the end of the final great war, the Alliance Military Force (AMF) was created via the Tripartite Treaty as a mutual deterrent to keep order in the system. The Alliance Military has a command system that is independent from any planetary government. They are a neutral power, suppressing military disturbances throughout the Gurhal System.
Their funding is provided by the governments of all three planets, but their ranks are comprised almost entirely of CASTs.
The Communion of Gurhal carries out the propagation of the Gurhal Faith and religious ceremonies as a religious organization. They also act as a political body, carrying out governmental duties on Neudaiz.
Four high-ranking members of the Communion, known as Light Masters, rule over "Festas," "Governmental Affairs," "Culture," and "Guard." These four are presided over by the Photon Master.
In Moatoob's satellite belt there are many areas that are too dangerous for warships and other large vessels, leading to relaxed enforcement of laws. As a result, there are many asteroids serving as rogue bases for pirating activities, casinos, and illegal businesses.
Within the rogues there are numerous groups, called "families," exerting their power and fighting for control.
The SEED are a mysterious alien life form that suddenly attacks the Gurhal System. It infects native creatures, making them violent, and alters the surrounding environment. Below is a brief description of the characteristics of the SEED.
During the Centennial Ceremony, the Alliance Military's fleet of warships suddenly came under attack by the mysterious SEED.
When the SEED hit the ground, they lay out roots and extend their stalks, shrouding the surface. Then a flower-like apparatus blooms, and from there, the virus-like infected cells are released (Note: the SEED virus doesn't seem to affect people). The SEED-Cores sticking out of the ground form a special flower-like barrier called a "blewme."
Normal weapons are useless against the blewme. The only way to defeat them with force is the Alliance Military's overwhelming firepower.
This is where the GUARDIANS come in with their specially developed tools, the "photon eraser" and "photon reflector." These tools still can't attack the blewme directly, but by exposing the zoma that act as the blewme's roots, the blewme can be made to wither, exposing the SEED-Core for direct attack. Goggles are needed to locate the zoma and photon points, as they cannot be seen with the naked eye.
The SEED refers to the mysterious life forms that have attacked the Gurhal System. The SEED plant their roots in areas where they settle, sprouting stalks and flowers, and scattering corrosive pollen.
The SEED isn't just damaging to the ground--it alters the DNA of the native creatures, making them violent and aggressive.
The Gurhal System is populated with more than just people. Huge native creatures live here, as well. To the people who live in Gurhal, while they coexist together, the creatures still pose a threat. Since the SEED invasion, there have been reports from all over the system of native creatures turning vicious.
In addition, military machinery, as well as people who oppose the GUARDIANS, can pose significant threats.
Guardians must be cautious when dealing with these dangerous entities. A few examples are shown below.
Koltova are creatures native to the planet Parum, and a staple of Parum cooking. The Gol Dolva is a variety of koltova bred for size, and can grow up to 17 feet high. Their intelligence levels are unimpressive, but one must watch out for their body crush and ramming attacks.
The native creature from Parum known as the "ruler of the grasslands." Extremely vicious in nature, it is usually found in higher altitudes. Due to the SEED disturbances, it has been sighted in the lowlands. Its powerful, fiery breath strikes fear in the hearts of many.
The most powerful species of the various Gougs that inhabit the Mizuraki Conservation District on Neudaiz.
A mid-sized creature, found in the Galenigare Canyon on Moatoob. It grows sharp spines throughout its body to repel enemies. One strike from its body will cause significant damage.
Large military machines.
Its arms can be fitted with different attachments to attack with a variety of weapons.
A large creature found in the Kugu Desert on Moatoob. It is surprisingly fast for its size, and possesses overwhelming power.
The Gurhal System is inhabited by a civilization that uses advanced technology. The foundation for all Gurhal technology lies is the energy particle, the "photon."
A photon is the most basic form of energy, and forms the foundation of science in the Gurhal System. In the Gurhal System, photons particles are plentiful in any environment, from planetary atmospheres to interplanetary space. They cannot be detected by normal people, but they respond to people's spiritual energy, acting as the catalyst for TECHNICs.
The primary energy source in the Gurhal System is photonic energy. Technology such as "photon reactors" and "photon drives" take in photons from their surroundings, and put them to various uses. They can also be made extremely tiny and are a part of the weapons and vehicles employed by the GUARDIANS. Because photon energy is affected by a person's spiritual power, the amount of energy created varies depending on the mental state of the person using it. Even if using the same reactor, a veteran's and a rookie's power output will have different results.
Some people questioned the wisdom of depending on photons, an inherently unstable form of energy that is too dependent on the mind of the user. One answer to this problem was the development of advanced photon energy, or A-Photon energy. A-Photon energy provides a high, stable level of energy output, and it has become very prevalent in the last fifteen years.
A-Photon energy and photon energy are not completely unrelated. Through a special process, photon energy particles are concentrated to form A-Photon crystals. The enormous amount of energy released when those crystals decay is A-Photon energy. Crystals aren't generally formed organically, but in extremely rare circumstances crystallization can occur, and there have been a few rare cases of A-Photon crystals being discovered in nature.
An A-Photon reactor puts photons through the entire process of collecting photons, converting them to A-Photons, then harnessing the energy created by their decay.
The reactor first processes photon particles to create A-Photon crystals, then exposes the crystals to vibrations of a specific frequency to trigger a chain reaction that causes the crystals to decay in a controlled manner. With additional mechanisms to accelerate the reaction, improve reaction efficiency and concentrate the resulting energy stream, the device is truly one of the most advanced collections of cutting-edge technology.
With the current level of technology, however, A-Photon reactors are still very large devices. Thus the compact photon reactors are far more popular for everyday use.
In Phantasy Star Universe, characters do not use shields or wear armor. The strength of a player's defense isn't dependent on armor, and players are free to dress how they see fit.
Then how does defense work? The line shield system covers the body with a thin field of photons, which absorbs attacks and impacts to protect the wearer. By equipping a higher version of the line shield system, one can resist stronger enemy attacks.
One of the unique properties of A-Photons is the ability to create and control warps in space. These small-scale warped spaces can be used to store weapons and equipment. The device that controls this is called a nano transformer, and is standard issue for all Guardians.
Photons are the catalyst for turning spiritual energy into various phenomenons. What was once identified as supernatural powers now can be explained scientifically by photons. These controlled phenomena have come to be referred to as TECHNICs.
RELICS are a general term for historical ruins believed to have been built roughly 12,000 years ago, found on every planet in the system. Even though they are historical sites, they are extraordinarily advanced structures from a civilization that has been determined to be more advanced scientifically than the Gurhal System today. Since the SEED invasion, many previously undiscovered RELICS sites have been located. However, there is still much that is unknown about RELICS, and their connection to the SEED is still a mystery.
